Wharenui Kura-ki-Uta

Our Wharenui Kura-ki-Uta stands at the heart of the College and sits proudly at the front of the school. The purpose of the wharenui being on the school property is for College peers to still feel grounded to their papakāinga and their marae, while in the busy environment of a school. If and when they need to they can return to Kura-Ki-Uta to replenish themselves. 

 

There are six hapu in Te Whakatohea; Ngāi Tamahaua, Ngāti Ira, Ngāti Ngahere, Ngāti Patumoana, Ngāti Ruatakena and Te Ūpokorehe. Many tauira at the College whakapapa to Te Whakatohea.

 

Every morning the students of Maurua-Ki-Tua house resite Karakia, a practice that has been passed down from Te Matua Tangata, Te Kooti a Rikirangi. The wharenui Kura-ki-Uta is home to Maurua-Ki-Tua staff and students and is a meeting place for house assembly, kapa haka noho, and Te Ao Haka classes.
